The VEU program, explained
The Victorian Energy Upgrades program (VEU) is a Victorian Government program that helps homes and businesses use less energy and spend less on power bills. It does that by making energy-efficient upgrades cheaper to install.
Here’s how it works. When an accredited provider installs an eligible upgrade, the energy it saves earns certificates under the program. The value of those certificates comes back to you as a discount on the upgrade.
What you can get depends on the upgrade, the system you’re replacing and the program rules at the time. We’re an accredited provider of VEU in Victoria and ESS in NSW, so we help you work out what you’re eligible for and guide you through the paperwork.
Here’s what needs to line up for a VEU discount.
All Victorian households can take part, including private rentals.
The system you’re replacing needs to be more than 2 years old.
The new product must be VEU approved, with at least a 5-year warranty.
Contact an accredited provider before you buy. Discounts usually can’t be claimed after installation.
Program rules change from time to time. We’ll confirm what applies to your home before you commit.
Two of the biggest energy users in most homes are hot water and heating. Upgrade either one and you could spend less every day.
Swap an old gas or electric hot water system for an energy-efficient heat pump. It heats water using far less energy, so your hot water costs less to run. Eligible upgrades may qualify for a VEU discount.
Replacing an inefficient electric or gas system.
Combined with a Solar Homes rebate and an eligible locally made product.
Announced: from 1 March 2027, a gas water heater in an existing Victorian home must be replaced with an electric system.
Replace an old gas heater or an inefficient system with energy-efficient reverse cycle heating and cooling. One system keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. Eligible upgrades may qualify for a VEU discount.
Replacing a room gas heater.
Replacing a ducted gas heater.
Covers single split, multi-head split and ducted systems.
Indicative discounts for households, as listed on energy.vic.gov.au. Your final discount depends on the system you replace and the one you install.
The exact process depends on the upgrade and the program rules at the time. Here’s what it looks like with us.
